ISO 8124
ISO 8124 is a series of international safety standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) specifically for the safety requirements of toys. It consists of several parts, each addressing different aspects of toy safety.
ISO 8124
What is the AS series of standards?
- ISO 8124-1: Safety of Toys — Part 1: Safety Aspects Related to Mechanical and Physical Properties: This part focuses on mechanical and physical properties, such as size, shape, and construction, to ensure that toys are safe for use by children.
- ISO 8124-2: Safety of Toys — Part 2: Flammability: This part specifies requirements and test methods for the flammability of toys to minimize the risk of fire hazards when exposed to ignition sources.
- ISO 8124-3: Safety of Toys — Part 3: Migration of Certain Elements: Addresses the migration of certain elements, such as heavy metals, from toy materials into the body and sets limits to ensure children’s safety.
- ISO 8124-4: Safety of Toys — Part 4: Swings, Slides, and Similar Activity Toys for Indoor and Outdoor Family Domestic Use: Specifically focuses on the safety requirements for swings, slides, and similar activity toys used in domestic settings.
- ISO 8124-5: Safety of Toys — Part 5: Chemical Toys (Sets) Other than Experimental Sets: Deals with the safety aspects of chemical toys (sets) other than experimental sets, setting guidelines to prevent risks associated with chemicals in toys.
- ISO 8124-6: Safety of Toys — Part 6: Certain Phthalate Esters in Toys and Children’s Products: Concerned with specific phthalate esters in toys and children’s products, setting limits to protect children from potential health risks.
- ISO 8124-7: Safety of Toys — Part 7: Requirements and Test Methods for Finger Paints: Specifies requirements and test methods for finger paints to ensure they are safe for children to use.
These standards provide guidelines, requirements, and test methods to manufacturers, retailers, and regulatory bodies to ensure that toys manufactured and sold comply with safety standards, reducing potential risks to children’s health and safety during play. Adherence to these standards helps to ensure that toys are designed and manufactured with safety considerations in mind, reducing the risks of injuries, hazards, or exposure to harmful substances for children using these toys.
